Tips for Surviving Japan in Summer 🌞
Japan’s summers are hot, humid, and can feel overwhelming if you’re not used to it. Here are some of Michelle's tips to help you stay comfortable:
-
Hydrate constantly: Carry water with you. Vending machines are everywhere, so you’ll never be far from a cold drink. Isotonic drinks such as Pokari Sweats are perfect for summer.
-
Cool towels & fans: Convenience stores sell cooling wipes, sprays, and mini fans—absolute lifesavers when it gets sticky!
-
Dress light but respectful: Light, breathable clothes help a lot, but remember temples and shrines may expect modest attire.
-
Avoid the midday sun: Plan indoor activities, like museums or shopping, for midday. Early morning and evenings are the best times to walk around (also less crowded!)
-
Sun protection: Sunscreen, hats, and even UV umbrellas (you’ll see lots of locals using them!) make a big difference.
-
Summer foods: Try cold soba, kakigori (shaved ice), or chilled drinks like mugicha (barley tea).
